Grayell sat on the porch of his tree-house, legs slightly swaying as they draped over the edge. He held a block of wood in his left hand, or what was a block of wood when he'd begun; and his hunting knife in the other.

He lifted it and blew the sawdust and curls from it, looked over it in the waking morning light; then settled it on his thigh once more and began slowly shaving, scraping and cutting at it. The shape was taking form, something new borne of something most considered plain, mundane, inconsequential. His hands and a knife.

He threw a glance to the quiet town of Wistvale, the streets silent and a dance of smokey tendrils weaving their way from the warm homes beneath to whisper away in the morning breeze.

They'd forgotten him, time had rolled on without him... and he was fine with that thought. He liked this solitude, this quiet, this... peace. It had been a long time coming.

A tiny swipe of the knife, the very tip of the blade and it was done. He ran fingers over the tiny figurine, dusted it off, blew the last of the sawdust and scratchings away. He looked at it a moment, holding it as precious in his calloused fingers... and then smiled.

He turned to his side and placed this with the others. The newest pup was sitting on it's haunches, looking at a butterfly that rested upon it's nose. He was of the opinion it had the most character amongst it's 4 other brethren, though all looked quite inquisitive.

Their father looked proud an patient, sitting atop a rock shelf, a larger figure of course, keeping an eye on his pack.

But his hand was so very careful as it picked up their mother. She slept, curled in a content ball, looking so very peaceful. So very perfect. He held this one with incredible care - the work with his knife had been different that day. The lines were cleaner, the shaving was smooth and seemed to work itself with the wood... an almost living miniature. Almost magical.

He studied it for quite some time before he slipped it back to where the others sat, as though he would wake her should he not be so delicate. Straightening up, he surveyed the tiny, wooden wolf family and chuckled a little. Just enough to off set the hint of pain that lurked in his eyes.

Kiko stuck her head around the wall. The treehouse, like Wistvale, had undergone several changes inside and out. Once upon a time it contained just the barest necessities of survival, and while it would never be a grandiose structure it was definitely different. It still blended in to the surroundings; naturally, the roof, walls and platform made from the same materials only stronger. It was still organically built, in that it flowed around the tree instead of cutting into it, though it was more robust than before. The only thing that had not changed was the ubiquitous rope ladder required to reach it.

There had been plethora of battles, too. There were still many things that needed fixing. But, it endured. They endured.

“Wolf?”

Her voice was soft. He was turned away from her with the broad line of his shoulders bent forward. Small pieces of wood, sawdust, and shavings littered the porch around his feet, but his hands were no longer busy carving. Kiko slid her arms around his waist and rested her face against his nape. She stood there for several seconds; too, just breathing him in. The sun which had been threatening the horizon for the last half hour or so was finally defeated. Dusk claimed their world.

Drew a slow breath and as he let it go, he relaxed. His eyelids lowered as his lips curled up, a completely content smile. His hands settled atop hers gently, then crossed them to wind her tighter about him. His head rolled back, nuzzling her with his cheek, feathers and baubles in his hair swaying gently in the cool dusk breeze and hiding their faces like a veil.

His voice was led with a slight murmur of happiness.

"My lotus. You bloom, even at night."

He chuckled just subtly, the compliment was sincere if perhaps a little much. He could not give voice to what he felt for her, his Chosen.

His eyes turned forward again, gazed over the treetops that covered the hill that led to what was now the sea. It was magical and he felt privileged, to live in this place and with this woman. He knew such happiness here and in that regard, the years had been kind to him.

Kiko did not reply. She was as laconic as ever, though these days that came from self confidence instead of any reason to hide her thoughts. She remained wrapped around him while the purple shadows of dusk ate away at the forest.

Her head turned. She laid her cheek against his back. He had been quiet recently. The late afternoons spent carving the little wooden family of wolves. Her eyes caught the newest addition; the pup with a tiny butterfly on his nose. The detail reminded her of the dragonbone comb he had carved for her a few years ago.

Kiko closed her eyes and her lips turned up with a smile. He could still surprise her.

Grayell took a long, slow breath and smiled, his eyes closing as well as the dark completely swallowed their home. The tiny fire in the hearth dappled over the trees, making the shadows play and dance about them as the crickets sang a song to keep rhythm. His hands squeezed hers gently, an affection but subtle gesture. He kept this moment, treasured it in the here and now and was again reminded of how complete his life was.

After a moment, he spoke gently.

So. I do believe it's my turn to fix dinner. Are you hungry?

Mmh. I am terribly hungry.

She had not moved to let go of him, though. She wasn't listening to the crickets or watching the shadows. Her attention was caught and held by him.

Food would be nice, too.

He smiled knowingly and most certainly in agreement with that suggestion. His right hand lifted hers and brought it up, where he kissed her wrist ever so gently. He murmured again in that contented, happy manner and then managed to turn in her arms.

Oh. The food might take hours...

His hand had found her cheek, his fingers leading his eyes as he brushed hair back and from her eye, behind her ear. He leaned in as those fingers slid to her neck and with careful precision, his teeth clamped on the corner of her lip and tugged ever so slightly.

Hours and hours I tell you.

Kiko's eyes followed his mouth to her wrist. A sound broke from her throat, the rough beginning of a growl. Food would take hours if he kept that up. Then he tugged on her lips with his teeth. The growl was traded for a hiss of pleasure. But, before he could follow that up with something else Kiko was gone.

She dove off the balcony head first and when she touched the ground it was with the body of a wolf. Her front and back paws collided with the earth and the flag of her tail went up as she took to the trees at a run.

He would catch her, naturally. He almost always did.

Grayell laughed aloud as he spun to follow her motion, but halted at the rail and watched her vanish into the tree line. It had been some time since he'd run on all fours, something he'd given thought to...

And so he vaulted over the rail and tumbled before hitting the ground on his still human feet, then bolted into the forest that shrouded their home. Feet scrambled over uneven ground, his worn hands clutching at branches to duck under them or pull himself along. She was a ghost in the night, smaller and faster - but he welcomed the challenge. He still knew these woods as well as she did and wasn't so sure he couldn't keep up as he was.

He was far from convinced he could, mind you.

Kiko did not look back. The wild profusion of sounds that came at the ending of the day filled her ears with temptation. She was a hunter in this shape, first and foremost. Plus, she was truthful about being hungry. Still, she managed to make it to the bank of the new sea without deviating.

Now, of course, she was in the open. She needed to find a place to hide. Her nose dropped to the ground and she followed a small footpath around a series of tumbled boulders that led to the dock. Her feet took her up over the steps, too, and she leaped from the wooden railing into the waiting deck of the Catalina.

He might not think to look for her here. She curled up with her tail hiding the tip of her nose.

Grayell came onto the beach soon enough, decided slower than her pace. Not only for less legs, but because he was tracking. His eyes worked overtime, picked out every piece of the puzzle that was her passing and led him, perhaps indirectly; along her route.

The beach was not the place to hide tracks, the sand was loose and wet and it has it's share of mud so here; he found it easier to follow. He could smell her of course, a scent that tugged at his core and led him happily along. The prints led to the docks, spattering of muddied paws upon the wood - and rather than veering for town, turned toward the sea.

He crouched, fingers swiping at the wet prints and grinned. He stayed there, crouched, his eyes scanning the dock. He was expecting some twist here, a surprise of some sort, for her to have doubled back in order to ambush him.

Of course... the Catalina was moored. Would she have chosen to hide there? Hardly the place to run if discovered.... but then perhaps she didn't want to run. He stole up upon the boat, untied it from the dock... and with a silent push, tumbled onto the deck.

Kiko shoved her nose into his back as soon as he tumbled into the deck after a quick scramble to regain her feet and balance. She did not think it would take him long to figure it out, she hadn't tried to hide which direction she had taken, either. Surprise came, however, when he sent the Catalina rocking into the waves for an impromptu sail, but she was not unhappy.

Her head smacked at him again.

Grayell spun and slumped onto his rear, bringing his hands up to grab at her neck and ruffle her fur affectionately. He smiled, was entirely happy with having found her and even laugh a little. Eyes bright with delight, he pulled her closer as he slid onto his back upon the deck.

Hm, Whatever is the matter?

Kiko gave a growl that would be menacing to anyone else in the world. But, as harsh as the sound was her body language did not match it, she was leaning into his hands, her ears were forward, and the wide plume of her tail was sweeping back and forth along her haunches.

She took a hold of one of his hands, though, wrapped her jaws around it to pull him upright. It was only seconds after she had tugged him to his feet that she changed form herself. Kiko wound her body around his hip and rested her head against his neck.

You know. You promised me food.
